DERRICK SHAWN GRANT

DESIGNING AND ARTIST CREATIVITY BEYOND THE MIND

MY CONCEPTS AND HOW I CREATE

My Name is Derrick Grant, I specialize in graphic design. I create intense multimedia paintings with acrylics and oil on canvas.   I have developed a method that has been referred to as the “Grantique” style.  This style uses computer-assisted digital/acrylic art using primarily computer  programs.     The medium of expression uses computer graphics which are printed on large canvas using traditional oil and acrylics paints. My current medium of expression uses self-taught computer graphics to create images that are true to life or surrealistic using a combination of graphic programs.

My background transcends the art and science world. I am a classically trained Human Anatomist and cell biologist. I was educated in Montreal Canada where I attended Vanier College, and McGill University. There I completed my B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD  and have taught at several medical schools. During my time in college I also took several minor electives in Art History, Painting and Drawing.  Over the past 20 years I have continued my art career, first as a hobby then in 2005 I move away from science and medicine and became a fultime artist.

To create my art pieces I use 2D and  3D  computer creative programs. I also use Painter, Poser  PhotoShop, Illustrator and other graphic programs. The resulting image is transferred from the computer to canvas and painted with acrylics or oils  in order to enhance the 3D visual. Thus I have been able to combine both fields of Science and Art  to produce  graphical designs that produce an  intense visual effect.

I am content moving away from the Science world and concentrating  my efforts on my artistic and design career.  My art pieces have now been displayed in several galleries and art shows world-wide such as in Philadelphia, New Hope, Newark, St Thomas V.I.,  San Juan Puerto Rico, London and Paris.

I hope you enjoy my work.

Derrick

Artistic Approach

As an artist, I bring both my medical anatomy background as well as education in art and art history and fuse these concepts in a novel and innovative way.  My art borrows elements from the high renaissance painters and surrealists; then these essential concepts are combined using contemporary computer and traditional painting to give birth to a revolutionary approach to visual interaction with the canvas. I consider myself a digital/traditional painter that uses the computer as a tool to enhance the standard paint medium to include intense colors and reflective surfaces so that the viewer of the art piece enters the story as it is illustrated on canvas.  My approach to art is to create pieces that are alive with passion, and that are portrayed as renaissance/surrealistic cerebral visions that come out of dreams.  At the same time I apply new scientific and spiritual principals to traditional painting in order to revolutionize the interaction the viewer has with each allegoric piece.

When creating this original art, my intention is to involve the observer, as much as possible, in the story being portrayed by the art piece.   Therefore, every piece is thought of and created by imagining the final canvas as a three-dimensional creation (as if one were to peek into a room) that draws the observer into the story.  This is why a reflecting sphere is often present within view of the person looking at the piece.  Additionally, I want the observer to feel the emotion of the characters illustrated in each piece, thus, the figures do not wear clothes and their bodies are composed of a network that reflects their nature (result of life’s effect on the body) and emotional state.

My approach to my art work has evolved over the years from a more representational-post-modern art piece aesthetic. Progressively, I have currently developed new techniques that explore color relationships and the inclusion of brush movement. This represents the flow of light and energy; see images below.
